Cookies

Cookies are small pieces of data stored by your Web browser and are generally used to remember information about preferences and pages you visited. Cookies are usually automatically set on your computer whenever you visit a site and they may last only for that session or for a period of time. Learn what info a cookie collects and how web sites use them. For example, Amazon.com collects cookies: otherwise you would never be able to create a "Wish List" or leave purchases in the shopping cart for later. This is the same with most sites.

99% of cookies are not considered spyware, however some firewall programs have agressively targeted some sites as potential information threats and automatically block them including popular news and shopping channels. If you can't see images or text is missing, you will have to adjust your Ad Blocker. If you use Norton Internet Security, here's what to do:

  • Disable ad blocking in NIS 3.0:
Select Start › Programs › Norton Internet Security › Norton Internet Security Ad Blocking. Click "Turn Off."
  • Disable ad blocking in NIS 2005:
Double click the Norton Personal Firewall icon › Click Status & Settings tab › Ad Blocking setting options: click Turn Off or Turn On. You can also select to block all ads or only pop ups.
  • Users can also go to Preferences and enter specific web sites under: Not Block Content. To make sure you have the correct URL, go to the home page of the site and copy the URL right from the top of the browser.
  • You can also click the down arrow next to the green globe on your Internet Explorer Task Bar, then uncheck "Block Ads from this Site."

With other Ad Blockers, read their manual or visit the company's web site for instructions on making this adjustment.

Adware and Spyware

Is your computer running slower than molasses? Maybe you saw a popup with funny icons or cute screensavers that you wanted. You clicked and zap, your computer now has adware or spyware installed. Porn, free video game and music download banners also install adware or spyware. They didn't tell you? Of course not! And they won't. Laws are gradually being created, but to enforce them is a near impossible task—so you will have to learn how to avoid these traps.

If you or anyone in your family have downloaded Kazaa, iMesh, AudioGalaxy or Bearshare (just some examples), you have adware installed on your computer. This is just a short list of the most popularly downloaded software that creates popups and other problems, such as redirecting you to other sites or even worse, collecting personal information and passwords.

Download the free MSN Windows Defender which is rated very highly.
