Ok, it is just a teensy unusual. I'm Renée Michaels and while my marriage fell apart, I'm still a cheerleader for long-lasting relationships. My ex-husband and I were married for 21 years and to make a very, very long story short, realized our relationship could not survive if we stayed married. We decided that keeping our friendship was more important than maintaining a marriage that never worked.
This is a rather unusual situation to understand—and while we have no regrets (well, OK, there are a few, I'm sure) about our time together, we are much happier apart. I was very lucky and my mother-in-law, Reggie was my "second mom." We remained close even after the divorce, until she passed on. I feel extremely fortunate that we could come to this realization and not discount the good we shared.
Marriage or any long-term relationship is one of the most unique and wonderful journeys we can experience in life. When you can share all that life dishes out and still know that "this is my soulmate"—well, that's the miracle of love! There's something that happens between two people over the course of time that can't be put into words. It is that essence of deeply knowing & loving that only comes through doing the time together, through thick and thin. There are no shortcuts with this one.
